Species and Gender: Togruta, female
Full name: Kura Nuhok
Nickname(s): None
Age: 23
Homeplanet: Shili, Shili System, Ehosiq Sector, Expansion Region
History: Kura comes from a long line of Togruta whose eldest daughters have been indentured to the Jedi at a young age. One of nine daughters, Kura was raised in a large, close-knit family, taught, like all Togruta, that there is honour in family, and working together is the highest calling that one could have. Her infant years were spent playing with her sisters, and many, many cousins, cared for in the bosom of her massive family, and being taught to hunt the creatures who would otherwise kill her people.
However, as the eldest daughter of Asalla Nuhok and Inahk Raa'ruar, she was sent to Jedi training camp at the age of eight, where she replaced her own large, loving family with a group of other young trainees. It was at camp that Kura discovered a strong single-mindedness in combat, her sole focus when in a duel being to win. When she was fourteen, she was selected to train with a Togruta Jedi Master, and went back to Togruta, in order to mature there, secretly serve as a Jedi protector of the world, and learn the cultures and customs of her people.
Her years at Jedi camp served her well, and Kura proved herself more than competent in a hunting situation, claiming her first solo prey at the tender age of sixteen. That said, hunting prowess was all well and good, but her social skills with other races were somewhat lacking, unless they happened to be other Jedi. Prior to Jedi camp, the only races that Kura had seen on her home planet had been somewhat predatory and warlike, and she had been taught that they were not to be trusted. Jedi camp, though, had opened her eyes to the fact that, under the skin, good people were good people, whether or not they had rusty skin and montrals, or were an exotic - to her eyes, at least - human being. To that end, she made it a point to try to meet as many new species as possible, and to attempt to improve her communication skills with them.
It was during her time back on Shili that she was introduced to a strange plant by a trader, a plant whose extract offered natural protection against bolts of energy from blasters, and lightsaber strikes. Whereas most Jedi who chose to use the root used it to create robes, Kura experimented with staining her skin, trying to find just the right amount without making her skin visibly the wrong colour. It is from these experiments that she has a scar on her left thigh from a lightsaber grazing her when she hadn't used quite enough stain.
Maybe it was her upbringing that was responsible, but Kura became attracted to the primal, natural side of the Force while back on Shili, and she found an affinity with the environment came as second nature to her, both with animals and plant life. Her first experience with natural uses of the Force came when her Master taught her how to increase the growth of plants, which Kura found invaluable when cultivating the plants for her protective extract. This led naturally into developing communication and affinity with animals, and, eventually, controlling the environment itself. However, her strongest connection with the Force occurred dealing with animals, and Kura was encouraged to develop this talent beyond the norm. Perhaps it is down to her primal instincts that she is able to communicate with - and control - beasts so well.
Her training continued under her Master, and, when she was nineteen, she returned to train at a Jedi Academy once more, honing her experience with other Padawans who had been in her class as a child. She spent almost four years there, proving herself to be highly skilled, her natural aggression and stamina making her a formidable opponent among her classmates.
Finally, she was ready, and was given her first assignment. She was to accompany a another new Jedi Knight, Kaziki Halcyon, along with a few Antarian Rangers, to gather supplies, munitions and indirect support for the Jedi movement. A largely secret mission, but one of great importance, Kura felt both honoured and nervous when given the assignment, although her initial reaction to Kaziki's background - without even having met him - was one of trepidation. After all, what could she have in common with a rich Corellian noble... right?
Personality: Safety in numbers, right? Well that's the way that Kura has been raised, and that is something that will stick with her for life. However, if she hopes to succeed within the Jedi order, she will have to learn a measure of resilience and self-reliance that she has not needed before.
Somewhat serious and single minded, Kura's main drive in life is not to let her family down, and to be the best Jedi that she can be. That she has to do that without the aid of her family and friends? So be it. However, they are always foremost in her mind, and she will fight to protect those she cares for the most. Slow to anger, when she fights, it is with self-control and an intense purpose, her one aim to win.
Like many of her people, if Kura has nothing of importance to say, she would rather not speak. While this is somewhat useful when in a potential conflict situation, it can do little to endear her to those who don't know her. However, if someone takes the time to get to know her, she is warm and friendly, and is happy to spend as much time as possible with those she considers to be her friends.
Kura likes being around people, the more the better. While she is learning to spend time alone without feeling anxious, it is still difficult for her, and she is happiest in a crowd. Used to working as part of a team with her own people, she is far more comfortable when she can lend a hand to a group endeavour than when having to deal with things alone. When she is alone, she can feel far more anxious than most people, and this can lead to her forming deep and complex attachments more quickly than others might expect.
If anything, she trusts too easily, wanting desperately to see the best in people, and, when this backfires, she can end up nursing the hurt for far longer than is good for her.
As with many of her people, Kura is a natural predator, and that doesn't just extend to normal hunting. When she sees something - or someone - she wants, she will do whatever it takes to get it, just as in a formal hunt.
Physical Description: Standing at around 5' 10" tall, not including her montrals, Kura is a little taller than average for a female Togruta. Slim, lithe and well toned, her body contains a strength that belies her build, and she is, as such, a formidable opponent in a duel.
Her skin is a rich, burnt red colour, with large creamy white markings around her eyes, pronounced cheekbones, and full, grey lips. Her eyes give her a somewhat haunting appearance, as the irises, as well as the pupils, are completely black, and much larger than a human's. Her montrals and long headtails are largely a very pale grey, with darker blue-grey stripes. These are not just for decoration, though - her montrals and headtails give the Togruta a passive echolocation ability, therefore enabling Kura to sense her environment with a greater degree than most.
She has a few thin white stripes on her arms and thighs, and she is almost always barefoot, preferring to feel in touch with the earth, believing that it gives her a freedom of movement that is restricted by footwear. She has a 4-inch long, half inch wide scar on her left thigh, caused by being grazed by a lightsaber when experimenting with the properties of Norris root when applied to the bare skin.
Kura has sharp, pointed teeth, perfectly suited to her carnivorous nature, although they are not quite as sharp as they used to be, due to less consumption of raw meat since she has been training as a Jedi.
Kura's skin is a little darker than some Togruta, and that is down to the use of the protective plant extract to stain her skin. The extract is naturally resistant to the energy from blaster bolts and light sabers, and gives her a hidden and unexpected advantage during combat.
When on Shili, Kura wears traditional Togruta robes - it wouldn't do to expose herself as a Jedi to all and sundry, after all. Long, relatively modest, yet cut so as to allow free movement, they aren't her first choice for a duel. For training and general fighting, she prefers to wear a leotard-type garment made of animal hide, the Togruta sash around her hips to cover her modesty. This allows her the ability to fight without hindrance, while the animal hide also gives some measure of protection. She also wears an akul-tooth headdress and necklace, made from the teeth of the first akul that she brought down alone.
Initial path: Light Side (Living Force)
Lightsaber Form / Other Fighting style: Kura utilises Shien (Form V) primarily. Ideally suited to her natural aggression and stamina, she takes pleasure in wearing down her opponent until they make a fatal mistake. However, she is aware that, in order to develop a more rounded fighting style, she will need to enfold elements of other styles into Shien.
