This strikes me with more dread than anything else. Disney hasn't done anything good with any of their other properties outside of Tron (take a look at Hunchback of Notre Dam). Not to mention the prospect of Star Wars characters turning up in Kingdom Hearts.

Here's what I think:"Note: This is for speculation and discussion, I am nobody of note and don't have insider info--so I truly have no idea what they're going to do for Episode VII. That being said, I have some strong opinions about this whole matter, and I've reasoned it out with my friends who are also big into Star Wars, and it boils down to this: We know they are not adapting any books or other existing canon, they've said that (source: www.swtorstrategies.com/2012/11/star-wars-episode-7-to-be-original-story.html )--which means they basically can't do anything within 40 years after RotJ as that time frame is so saturated with stories, making meaningful, worthwhile, good movies would be impossible. True, there is always the possibility of them taking a massive dump all over pre-established canon and resetting everything, including recasting the power trio of Luke, Han, and Leia, but that would release an outcry the likes of which have never been witnessed by mortals ere the eschaton doom us all. This is a bad idea and Disney is smart enough to avoid this. We can look at the past to glean hints of the future. Before Episode I, there were already about ten irl years of canon being written and produced, and Lucas didn't let a soul (not even Timothy Zahn, the saint towards whom the most nerdgasms hath been directed) touch the era of the Clone Wars. It was a big hole in the timeline that nobody knew anything about, and that's what made the prequel trilogy so exciting to look forward to. In today's state of the EU, there is a similar hole in the timeline between roughly 40 to 140 years after Ep. VI. Not a single shred of canon has been written about the time between Fate of the Jedi and the Legacy comics (featuring Kol Skywalker, so we know the family name lives on). Lucas has always said, since the early 80s, that a sequel trilogy would feature and old and wizened Luke Skywalker teaching the new generation of Jedi Knights having their own adventures. Incidentally, there is a rough matchup in canon time and irl time, and Mark Hamill and co. are right around the same age as Luke Skywalker and co. right around the time of Fate of the Jedi. Therefore it only makes sense that that is exactly when Episode VII will happen. It fits right into the behavior pattern of the higher-ups involved and will step on a few toes as possible for all the fans. Frankly, I think it's foolish to reason otherwise. Thoughts?"

That would work for me.
Also, Han shot first.

DISNEY HASN'T DONE ANY GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT?!?!?!?!?! A) It's 'DAME' dumbass. Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's a famous building AND a book. That's what school was for. Learn to spell; or at least USE spellcheck. B) While I am not rolling over with glee over the merge, to say that the only good thing that Disney has ever done is Tron?!? You are psycho!! I love Tron, but the original only made a marginal sum in the box office sales. Disney had made over 50 animated films and hundreds of live-action and mixed media productions. Yeah so Princesses may not be you schtick, that does not define the company as a whole. Disney is a powerhouse for a reason! murglak I wanna punch you so hard right now; you will feel 4 times the amount of pain I'm in - and my right ovary EXPLODED. (And if you even start the argument that Disney is for kids I know at least 3 people on this blog that will murder you)
Tim: I hate new things too. This scares me, but if any company could even attempt to do something this crazy I'm glad its Disney, they pay an intense amount of detail into their projects and they have the money to do it well. I truly believe it will be a coin flip as to how it does. Not in box office obviously, which I'm sure will be huge for the sheer masses and the curiosity that surrounds it.
Sorry everybody. There are three things I love in this world (not counting Jesus) 1. Lents 2. Disney 3. Star Wars I know my stuff, just ask Oph or Lents... you don't wanna try and fight this.

It's a very good book, terrible Disney movie. And the difference between us seems to be I would never abuse another for a difference of opinion.

yes this is a touchy subject, let's keep it as civil and non-aggressive (passive or otherwise) as we can. Az, I know your ovary exploded and we all feel for you, also it was 5 in the morning and we all knows what happens to a person when they're delirious with pain and lack of sleep. Kaz, I would say Disney has made many good films and I'm not concerned about them making a bad movie. If you could explain why you think Disney makes bad things then we'd all be keen to hear your explanation.

I think what they did to Victor Hugo's book was a travesty, even a bit disrespectful. Not to mention what kind of person it took to look at that work and think "Hey, that's make a good children's story." I'm not particularly fond of their translations of the various fairy tales they've adapted either. Pixar has done some good work with much more original ideas and that I can appreciate. I'm not saying what Disney does in Star Wars is guaranteed to be bad, but rather that the odds of them making something that isn't aimed at their normal audience is somewhere on par with Lucas releasing the original trilogy (where Han shot first, etc. ) on Blu Ray.

Oh lord, there was a Disney argument and I wasn't here for it? I'm probably just beating a dead horse at this point, but I have a couple of things to add to this delightful conversation.
Firstly, Disney is not just for girls and nor do all girls like Disney. That's like saying Star Wars is for boys and all boys like Star Wars... which we all know to be false. So let's avoid stereotypes all together as they provide zero insight or reason to the discussion.
Secondly, there are many reasons as to why Disney adapted fairy tales from their original stories. First and foremost, Walt Disney had children and wanted to make the stories accessible to them. I'm not saying that it is necessarily a GOOD thing (I've done research on fairy tales, how they affect a child's development and cognition, and what a child loses by seeing only the "Disneyfied" versions) but he began making films during the Great Depression. Therefore, beautiful worlds, a clear distinction between good and evil, and happy endings were deemed very important. It has never been done out of disrespect and I don't believe that changing the stories is disrespectful either. Disney films give people a sense of protected childhood innocence that adults can turn to again and again to temporarily escape the world we must endure. They also keep alive important values: love, faith, friendship, hope, and joy.
Thirdly, the Disney franchise is much more than animated films and we know that they can pull off great live action movies as seen in Tron, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Avengers. Disney knows how much Star Wars means to its fans and is going to be trying their best to please them (us). Also, I'm not going to deny the fact that they are hoping to make a lot of money off of this, so they definitely are not going to go off and create films that would not fit into the Star Wars universe. Without a doubt, Disney is going to do a good job. There are always going to be the critics, but in the end I am sure that the films will be within the constrains of the Star Wars universe and will have all of the action, adventure, light saber battles, perhaps a little romance, a little comedy, and jumps to hyperspace we could ever want. As my mother used to always say to me, "You can't not like it until you've tried it." So give it a chance before you completely knock it, guys.
